Description

Shelf lighting turns storage into display: each shelf washed in its own line of light, with the strip hidden behind the front edge where you never see it. One prewired kit lights the whole unit, from a single alcove shelf to a full wall of bookcases, and the same configurator will light the inside of a display cabinet instead if that is the job.

Every kit is built to your furniture rather than sold in fixed lengths. Tell the configurator how many shelves you have and roughly how wide they are, and we cut a strip for each shelf, make up the shelf-to-shelf link cables, and size the driver for the exact load before it ships. The price updates as you build, so what you see is what you pay.

How to Build your Shelf Lighting Kit

Five choices, in order, in the configurator above:

  1. Where the light goes. Under each shelf for the classic lit-shelving look, or one continuous run around the inside of an alcove or display cabinet.
  2. Colour. Fixed white in warm 3000K, natural 4000K, pure 5000K or cool 6000K. Tunable white (CCT) you adjust anywhere from 2700K to 6500K from the remote. RGB or RGBW for colour changing. Or one fixed colour in red, green, blue, pink or orange.
  3. Control. Static on the wall switch, dimmable from an RF remote, or an RF remote for the colour changing options.
  4. Measurements. Number of shelves and their average width, or one total length for a cabinet or alcove run.
  5. Add-ons. An aluminium profile with diffuser, and a spare connector pack.

Light the Objects, Not the Room

A lit shelf is glare a metre from your eyeline if it is done badly. The white and tunable white strips in this kit are dotless COB: one continuous line of light with no individual diodes to reflect in glass shelves, glazed doors or the objects on display. Mounted behind the front edge of each shelf, the strip lights what sits below it and stays invisible from anywhere in the room.

Choose Dimmable and the kit includes an RF remote dimmer and receiver, so a display can sit at a low level in the evening without a wall dimmer. Runs are fed in parallel every five metres, so even a full wall of lit shelving stays even from top to bottom.

What Is Included:

  • LED strip, cut to length, with a pre-wired segment for each shelf
  • A driver sized automatically for your total load
  • RF remote dimmer and receiver, or the colour remote, depending on the control you choose
  • Shelf-to-shelf link cables and solderless connectors
  • Aluminium profile and diffuser if you add it
  • Wiring diagram and measuring guide

The link cables run up the back corner or behind the uprights between shelves, so one kit and one driver light the whole unit.

How do I fit my shelf lighting kit?

Everything is pre-wired and the connectors are solderless, so the strips and links go together by hand. Fix each strip under the front edge of the shelf, facing down and slightly back, so the light washes the shelf below without shining into the room; the optional profile gives it a neat face on open shelving seen from below.

Whether you need an electrician comes down to the driver. Most shelving units use a plug-in driver that goes into a standard socket behind or beside the furniture. Very long runs need a larger hardwired driver, which is work for a qualified electrician. The configurator tells you which one your kit uses before you order.

FAQs for our Shelf Lighting Kits

Do I need an electrician?

Usually not. Most shelf and cabinet builds run from a plug-in driver in a standard socket. Only very long runs step up to a hardwired driver, and your kit tells you which it uses before you buy.

Where exactly should the strip go on each shelf?

Under the front edge, facing down and slightly towards the back. That washes the whole shelf below in light and keeps the strip itself out of sight from a standing or seated eyeline.

My shelves are different widths. What do I enter?

Enter the average width. Each shelf gets its own pre-cut strip and the prewired link cables take up the differences, so a mixed unit is fine.

Can I light a glass display cabinet with this kit?

Yes. Use the continuous option and run the strip around the inside face of the frame. Choose the dotless COB white and the glass shows one clean line of light instead of a row of reflected dots.

Can the lights respond to a cabinet door?

Not from the kit itself, but we sell door switch sensors separately that wire in between the driver and the strip, so the lights come on when the door opens.

Are the lights dimmable?

Yes. Choose Dimmable and the white and single colour strips come with an RF remote dimmer and receiver, whatever the length. The colour changing strips dim from their own remote.

How many shelves can one kit cover?

Up to twelve shelves, and one driver runs up to 48m of the white strip, with longer kits split into zones on a driver each. Runs over 5m are fed in parallel from the driver so the top shelf is as bright as the bottom one.
