The aluminium foil draws heat away from the LED strip transferring it to the surrounding air through conduction and radiation.

Keeping the temperature of LEDs below 60 degrees is very important, so when flexible LED strip is used on a surface that doesn't conduct heat, provision must be taken to control the running temperature. Using this tape is one solution.
